Tell us about your city!!!

What ties most of us on this blog (thanks for the great initiative Hanu!) is either our interest/experience in or our heritage from Libya.. So, I thought it would be interesting to invite each and every one of you to write an exerpt about where in Libya you are from or the places you have visited (for those of you who are not from Libya) and give a little description of history or customs or anything really so that we each get more educated about our lovely jamahiriya and learn a bit more about each other in the process..

Tripoli is Libya's largest city and port, and is the country's capital. Meeting-place of the People's Congress and full-time residence of Colonel Qaddafi, it is known in Arabic as Tarabalus Al-Gharb, or Tripoli of the West.
The city was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea. From the Phoenicians Tripoli passed into the hands of the rulers of Cyrenaica (Barca), from whom it was wrested by the Carthaginians. It next belonged to the Romans, who included it within the province of Africa, and gave it the name of Regio Syrtica. About the beginning of the 3rd century A.D. it became known as the Regio Tripolitana (on account of its three principal cities, Oea, Sabrata, and Leptis, which were leagued together), and was probably raised to the rank of a separate province by Septimius Severus, who was a native of Leptis. Like the rest of North Africa, it was conquered by the Muslims early in the 8th century.

This beautful City is who stol my heart and made me thinking about her and love everything about her...love her airs....love her sea...love her people...love her streets...love her old bulding..love her songs..
She has old history....lovely beach...lovely skies..
    lovely people...

  • It feels like my 2nd home although I've only been there for 3 1/2 years. Love the trips to the market, to the bakery to buy fresh bread after school, although there weren't any cinemas (that I know of) or a grand mall, we had a great time going to the beaches, to sabratha & leptis magna. I miss going out of town to visit the markets & buy fresh fruits. Oh I want to eat fresh figs again!
